Why Financial Planning is Non-Negotiable for Charities and Social Enterprises in Tough Times

It’s often said that finance is one of the most important resources in an organisation. But in many small non-profits, it still isn’t treated that way.

Instead, finance gets seen as a necessary compliance task – a once-a-year obligation for the Charity Commission, Companies House or HMRC.  Something to be dealt with when the accounts are due, or when a funder asks a question.

But with everything going on right now – the cost of living crisis, cuts in government funding, and a hyper-competitive, unpredictable funding environment, nonprofits can’t afford to treat financial management as an afterthought.

If your organisation wants to stay afloat, remain a going concern, and continue making impact, now is the time to engage more deeply with your numbers – not just to comply, but to take control.

Here’s why this matters more than ever:

🎯 Budgets aren’t just paperwork – they’re your financial plan.

They help you decide what’s possible, what needs adjusting, and where your resources are best used.

📉 Reviewing your budget regularly helps you spot risks early.

It’s not enough to set it once at the beginning of the year. Things change—funding gets delayed, costs rise, new opportunities come up. You need to know where you stand.

🔮 Forecasting and reforecasting give you visibility.

Good forecasting shows you what might happen next. Even better – reforecasting helps you stay agile when things shift.

🤔 Scenario planning helps you prepare, not panic.

What if funding drops? What if that major project gets delayed? Having a few realistic scenarios ready gives your board and leadership confidence to act, not just react.

Too often, I see finance treated like a support function – something in the background. But the truth is, finance is strategic. It tells the story of where you’ve been and gives insight into where you can go.

So if you’ve been leaving finance on the backburner, this is your nudge to bring it forward.

💬 I go much deeper into this in the upcoming episode of The Nonprofit Bookkeeper – dropping very soon, so keep an eye out.
We’ll talk about how small charities can build confidence around their numbers and what practical financial planning looks like when resources are tight.  Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it.
